Faith Ringgold, esteemed for her story quilts, used her talent to express themes of identity and history, specifically the civil rights movement. Featuring her renowned piece, Early Works #25: Self-Portrait, designed in 1965, we see her art style shine through which was reflected in many of her other pieces.  With bold lettering her name is largely displayed above and below the portrait.
