The Museum’s porcelain vase—an example of so-called Jingdezhen ware—commemorates a literary gathering in the 1690s at the city of Jingdezhen, a major production center of Chinese ceramics. The original vessel is richly decorated with local sites and figure groups, as well as poems and transcriptions of an essay. Collectively, they tell the true story of strangers becoming friends despite traditional class boundaries.Â
